New projects for SAPG

We have begun several new projects for 2017-18 to address current priorities for stewardship in Scotland. Our work aligns with current health strategy and in particular the Chief Medical Officer’s Realistic Medicine strategy.

We have engaged with a broad range of clinicians across the country to set up steering groups to support various new projects including the following:

  • Antifungal stewardship: to address variation in use of antifungal medicines in cancer care, critical care and respiratory medicine.
  • Scottish Hospitals Antibiotic Review Programme: education and tools to support clinicians with a timely and comprehensive review of intravenous antibiotics.
  • Penicillin Allergy de-labelling: tools to support clinicians to review patients labelled as ‘penicillin allergic’ and remove this label when clinical history suggests they do not have a true allergy.
  • National Hospital Antibiotic Guidelines: development of consensus guidance for common infections in hospital practice to reduce unnecessary variation through standardisation of antibiotic choice and duration.
